Steatin (Stearic Acid) is one of the most widespread ingredients in cosmetics. You will find it in almost all facial and body cleansers, as well as in soaps. It is one of the many saturated fatty acids found in both plant and animal organisms. Its content is particularly high (28-45%) in cocoa butter and cara butter (from which it comes after processing).

When stearic acid is used in soap making (cold method), it helps to increase the hardness and maintain the shape of the soap. Although there is no "absolute" rule for the amount required when stearic acid is used in soap making (depending on the oils used), however, 5-8 grams of stearin per kilogram of oil is a good "guide."

When stearic acid is used in cosmetic formulations such as creams, lotions, and so on, Stearic Acid acts as an emulsifier ("binds" oils with water) as a component of increasing the density of the cosmetic and as a booster of its moisturizing action . A steatin ratio of about 3% is sufficient to increase the density of a lotion (respectively would require 10-15% "butter" to achieve a similar effect).
