Polysorbate 80 (also known as Tween 80) is an emulsifier. It is widely used in the manufacture of cosmetics, in order to mix materials of different composition - mainly oils with water - without the use of alcohol.

Polysorbate 80 is particularly useful if you want to add base oils to some cosmetics. If, for example, you want to add almond oil to a shampoo or if you want to make a bath oil or bath oil with base oils then Polysorbate 80 is the ideal ingredient to "bind" the materials to each other. The proportion of Polysorbate 80 that you should use is twice as much as that of base oils - if, for example, base oils are at a 2% proportion in the cosmetics you make, then add 4% of Polysorbate 80.

Polysorbate 80 is ideal for use with base oils. If you want to use more "light" oils (eg essential oils), then we recommend using Polysorbate 20.
