Mastic is an aromatic resin extracted from the mastic tree or schin, scientific name "Pistacia lentiscus", the evergreen bush of the family of "Anacardiaceae" which can also obtain a tree form and reach a height of 3 meters . It thrives on poor and sandy terrain, near the beaches of the entire Mediterranean, from the Iberian peninsula and France to Turkey and Israel.

The essential oil of mastic is obtained by distilling the branches and leaves of the plant and its aroma is warm, woody and balsamic. The main active ingredients of the essential oil are Monterpenes: α-Pinene, Mycene and Sabinene, substances with strong antimicrobial, antifungal and antioxidant activity.
