D-mannose is a simple sugar similar to D-glucose and D-fructose. It is isolated from fruits, but is also produced in small quantities by the human body. Exogenously administered D-mannose is rapidly absorbed, is not metabolized in the body, thus not affecting blood sugar levels and body weight, and is eventually excreted in the urine. It has been found to protect the urinary tract from E. coli infections. Mannose does not kill, but prevents the attachment and growth of pathogens that cause urinary tract infections. Germs that cannot be attached are eliminated by urination.
