Omega-3's are a family of polyunsaturated essential fatty acids found most abundantly in fish. Fish oil is a great source of eicosapentaenoic (EPA) acid and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). They are both sources of omega 3 fatty acids. 

There is an important omega 6 to omega 3 ratio that should be adhered to. Like omega-3, omega-6 produces eicosanoids which play a role in inflammation. Omega-6 is often assumed as being more pro-inflammatory. Omega-6 is generally more abundant in a typical western diet so omega-3 should be balanced to correct the ratio.
