However, more research is needed on the potential weight loss effects of berberine.

III. Lipids

Studies show that berberine reduces cholesterol and triglyceride levels, while increasing HDL (good) cholesterol levels. While more research is needed, it may reduce the risk of heart disease in the long term.

In a 2008 study in 116 people with diabetes, taking one gram of berberine per day reduced fasting blood sugar by 20%. It also reduced hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), a marker of long-term blood sugar control, by 12% and showed improvements in blood lipid levels such as cholesterol and triglycerides.

Dosage and side effects

Many of the studies cited in the article used doses in the range of 1500 mg per day.

Berberine may interact with some medications. Do not take it with cyclosporine and those with G6PD deficiency.

If you are taking any medications, talk to a healthcare professional before taking berberine. Especially if you are currently taking medications that lower blood sugar.

Overall, berberine has an excellent safety profile. The main side effects are related to digestion, and there are some reports of diarrhea, constipation, and bloating.

The best dosage recommendation is 500mg three times a day, for a total of 1500mg, half an hour before meals.
