Protecting our eyes must be a top priority!
In the EU, about 760 per 100,000 people have disturbed vision. The two most important causes of visual impairment in Western countries are cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Both conditions are associated with diabetes, obesity and aging. While visual disturbance is not a direct threat to life, reduced vision can cause serious limitations to independence, mobility and quality of life.
Oxidative disaster is an important risk factor in both situations. There is growing evidence that antioxidant nutrients, especially vitamins A, C and E, along with the carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin pigments (found in fruits and vegetables) can prevent or delay the onset of these forms blindness in old age.

Omega 3 fatty acids
Several studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids can help protect against macular degeneration and dry eye syndrome. Essential fatty acids can also help to properly drain the intraocular fluid from the eye, reducing the risk of high eye pressure and preventing glaucoma.
Omega-3 fatty acids have also been found able to reduce the risk of dry eye. This is accomplished in two basic ways: firstly, they reduce the abnormal evaporation of natural tears and secondly increase the density of the calicoid cells of the conjunctiva on the surface of the eye. These cells secrete substances that lubricate the eye during refinishing, stabilize lacrimal film and reduce dryness.
Each capsule contains: 625 mg of molecularly distilled fish oil of which 225 mg of EPA and 170 mg of DHA

Proliferative retinopathies are the main cause of blindness. These diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity, caused by abnormal blood vessel development or neovascularization in the retina, the part of the eye that detects and converts light into electrical signals are sent to the brain.
In 2007, a team of researchers published a study, led by Lois Smith, MD, Ph.D., professor of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, Boston Children's Hospital, who proposed omega-3 fatty acids, such as docosahexaenoic acid (EPA ) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) can prevent these diseases. Now Dr. Smith and colleagues show that a by-product of DHA, called 4-hydroxypowachexanoic acid (4-HDHA), may be the chemical that prevents neovascularization in the retina.
Interestingly, researchers found that conversion of DHA to 4-HDHA does not occur in the retina. Instead, their results show that conversion can occur in immune cells, called leukocytes, which circulate throughout the blood. Researchers have shown that human leukocytes can also convert DHA to 4-HDHA. This of course suffices to have DHA in adequacy.
The results reported by Dr. Smith and his colleagues reinforce the idea that eating more fish or taking omega-3 fatty acid as a dietary supplement can help prevent and treat the abnormal growth of blood vessels seen at a progressive rate develops in retinopathies and possibly degeneration of a spot. Current treatments for these diseases, such as laser coagulation or antibody injections in the eye, are invasive and costly. Dr. Smith notes that because of their excellent safety profile, ease of administration, and low cost, omega-3 is an attractive possible solution.
The results of this study were published on February 9, 2011 by Science Translational Medicine (Sapieha P et al., "5-Lipoxygenase Metabolite 4-HDHA Is a Mediator of the Antiangiogenic Effect of? -Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids," Sci. Med, February 9, 2011, vol. 3 (69), pp. 69ra12].
