Glyceryl stearate (source http://www.cosmeticsinfo.org) is formed during the esterification of glycerol and stearic acid (reaction of an alcohol and an acid).
Glyceryl stearate produces an excellent emulsion and, when used in combination with other emulsifiers, creates a highly stable lotion that acts as a lubricant on the surface of the skin, preventing the loss of water and giving the skin a soft texture and beautiful appearance.
An interesting feature of glyceryl stearate is its ability to render non-fat combined in a cosmetic oil formulation, allowing the production of creams and emulsions which can bear the properties of the oil without having its oiliness.
Note: The word alcohol when used in relation to the components of cosmetic chemistry has a different meaning from alcohol, which has been fermented and found in alcoholic beverages. Therefore these two words should not be confused and cosmetic alcohol may be included in formulations used by Muslims in the faith.
