Lactobacillus acidophilus
It is a type of beneficial bacterium. Its name contains a hint on what it produces: lactic acid. This is done by producing an enzyme called lactase. It can help reduce cholesterol (if administered with another probiotic), it prevents and treats diarrhea, it improves symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, it can help with treatment and prevention of vaginal infections, it can prevent and reduce symptoms of a cold and the flu or allergies, and is good for bowel health.

Lactobacillus Plantarum
It is a probiotic which stimulates the digestive system, fights bacteria causing diseases and helps the body produce vitamins. Studies have shown that Lactobacillus Plantarum helps with irritable bowel syndrome and eczema (atopic dermatitis). A 2014 study on journal Nutrition showed that it protected the cardiovascular health of post-menopausal women with metabolic syndrome.

Lactobacillus Casei
It is a probiotic used for prevention or treatment of diarrhea. This includes infectious diarrhea, traveler’s diarrhea, and diarrhea related to antibiotics. It can also have some effect on other digestive issues such as colic, constipation, inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome.

Lactobacillus paracasei
It is a type of lactic acid bacteria commonly used in fermentation of dairy products. L. paracasei is similar to other Lactobacillus strains. Nevertheless, each strain is differentiated from each other by the way it is fermented and the criteria required for growth.
It strengthens the immune system, has anti-inflammatory effect and helps with bowel health.

Lactobacillus bulgaricus
It is a beneficial bacterium which has similar properties to other lactobacillus types. Studies have shown that it helps with antibiotics-related diarrhea, Crohn’s disease and reduction of constipation symptoms. Also, lactobacillus bulgaricus, in combination with other probiotics, can help with mental disease such as depression although most studies on the matter have been conducted on animals and more studies are required.

Lactobacillus brevis
It can help with treatment of diarrhea in children and support the activity of natural killer cells (NK) in adults of more elderly age. NK cells is a type of cells which kill pathogens, fight infections and stop the growth of cancer cells. L. brevis may also increase antibiotics efficacy.

Lactobacillus reuteri
It can produce antimicrobial molecules. L. reuteri, due to its antimicrobial effect, can obstruct the colonization of pathogenic microbes. L. reuteri can benefit the host’s immune system. For example, some L. reuteri strains can reduce inflammatory cytokines production while the growth and function of regulatory T cells. Wit the ability of enhancing the intestinal barrier, L. reuteri colonization can reduce microbial translocation from the intestine to the tissues. Microbial translocation to the intestinal epithelium has been assumed to be inflammation onset. Therefore, inflammatory diseases may improve, increasing L. reuteri colonization.

Lactobacillus salivarius
It is found in the human body and it produces its own antibiotics. These antibiotics specifically address invading pathogenic bacteria. Also, given that it produces lactic acid, acidity helps with fighting bad bacteria and creates an ideal environment for other probiotics. L. Salivarus improves digestive health, immunity and teeth health. In people, L. salivarius has been used for prevention and treatment of various chronic conditions, including ashtma, cancer, atopic dermatitis, halitosis and, to a very limited degree, for prevention and treatment of infections.

Lactobacillus fermentum
It improved cholesterol in a clinical study and reduced gastrointestinal and upper respiratory infections in some clinical trials in humans. In laboratory studies and laboratory animals, L. fermentum has been shown to increase nutrient bioavailability, reduce inflammation, help with intestinal health, reduce stress, alleviates alcohol-induced hepatic impairment and protects from virous, bacteria and fungi infections.

Lactobacillus gasseri
It can help with reducing abdominal fat and supporting weight loss and causes inflammatory effects on the large intestine for reducing the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis. Helicobacter pylori elimination rates are consistently higher in individuals who have been received prescription for antibiotics with probiotics (including Lactobacillus gasseri and Lactobacillus acidophilus) compared to those provided only with antibiotics.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus
It can help with prevention or treatment of various diarrhea types. For example, L. rhamnosus can protect from antiobiotics-related diarrhea. Antibiotics can disturb the microbiome, which can lead to digestive symptoms such as diarrhea. L. rhamnosus also helps with intestine health, fights the fungus Candida, reduces bacterial growth and gum inflammation and prevents urinary infections by killing harmful bacterial and restoring vaginal flora.

Bifidobacteria (general)
Bifidobacteria types are probiotics (“good” bacteria) living in the intestines. One of the main functions of this bacteria type in people is digestion of fibers and other composite hydrocarbons which the body cannot assimilate on its own. Bifidobacteria help with the production of other important chemical substances, including vitamins B and healthy fatty acids. They can help with diarrhea, constipation and other intestinal disorders. “Good” bacteria such bifidobacteria can help with food breakdown, nutrients absorption and fighting “bad” organisms which might cause disease. Bifidobacteria are usually used for diarrhea, constipation and irritable bowel syndrome. They are also used for preventing common cold and the flu. They can reduce the body mass index and blood cholesterol in individuals with metabolic syndrome. They can help with depression. Many diseases are related to low bifidobacteria number in the intestines. For example, studies have shown that people with coeliac disease, obesity, diabetes, allergic asthma and dermatitis are shown to have lower bifidobacteria levels in their intestines compared to healthy people.

Bifidobacterium lactis
It can improve gastrointestinal symptoms due to the changes it creates in bowel mobility and hypersensitivity. It helps with weight control and blood sugar balance, intestinal function and immunity (since 70% of our immune system is in the intestine) and cardiac health.

Bifidobacterium bifidum
It alleviates irritable bowel syndrome symptoms, boosts the immune system, reduces inflammation and helps with infant eczemas (in the eczema study, which was published in 2010 on Pediatric Allergy and Immunology, B. bifidum was given to pregnant women with history of eczema some weeks before giving birth, and after birth it B. bifidum was administered to the infants for 6 months).

Bifidobacterium breve
It is mostly known for its probiotic benefits in infants and young children. Even though it is found in adults’ intestines, populations are much larger in infants. B. breve has a important role in the way that infants break down mother’s milk. For adults, one of the most significant benefits of B. breve is its ability to improve skin health. Especially children can benefit from the anti-allergic benefits of B. breve (eczema, asthma). It reduces fatty mass in obesity-prone adults. It is beneficial in terms of reducing constipation and diarrhea, especially in children.

Bifidobacterium infantis
It is a bacterium which produces lactic acid and provides many benefits to neonates as well as adults. It can help with alleviating irritable bowel syndrome symptoms. If you have irritable bowel syndrome, it can help with reducing abdominal pain. It can also help reduce flatus and inflation. It can also reduce inflammation levels in patients with ulcerative colitis, chronic fatigue syndrome and psoriasis.

Bifidobacterium longum
It is a probiotic which is efficient in alleviating gastrointestinal, immunological and infectious diseases. Its effects are attributed to its ability to stabilize the intestinal microbiome and improve the intestinal environment. B. Longum has been correlated with the following benefits: enhanced mood, histamine clearance from the intestine, ammonia clearance from the intestine, production of butyrate and short-chain fatty acids.
