The name Thyme (Thym) refers to approximately 350 species of the genus Thymus, of the broader botanical family Lamiaceae, which are found in various regions of Europe, North Africa and Asia. The main aromatic substances of thyme are: thymol, carvacrol, linalool, geraniol and α-terpineol. However, a remarkable diversity is observed in the percentage content of the above substances, which indicates the existence of different chemotypes of thyme, with similar properties and actions, depending on the percentage proportion of these elements in the composition of each species and the place of origin of the plant.

Thyme with the chemotype Thymol, scientific name Thymus zygis thymol, is a herbaceous, perennial shrub of the botanical family of the Labiatae with small green leaves and dark purple flowers, native to sunny areas of the Mediterranean basin with sandy or clayey well-drained soils.

Thyme thymol essential oil is obtained from the distillation of the leaves and shoots of the plant and has a warm, woody aroma with a slight medicinal undertone. The main molecules of its chemotypical composition are the monoterpenes: terpinen-4-ol, myrcen-8-ol, myrcen-8-yl acetate, γ-terpinene and the phenols: thymol (at a percentage of approximately 65%-70%), which are responsible for the significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiseptic and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil.
