Arginine and citrulline are two amino acids, integral to the use and metabolism of proteins as well as the maintenance of muscle tissue. Both are key intermediates in the urea cycle, where they participate in the deoxidation of ammonia through the production of urea.

Arginine plays an important role in cell division, wound healing, the removal of ammonia from the body, immune system function and hormone release. Endogenous arginine is a precursor for the synthesis of nitric oxide (NO), contributes to wound healing and regulates blood pressure. In addition, any arginine that is not converted to urea enters the general bloodstream where it is distributed to various tissues, and is metabolized for other uses such as protein synthesis.

Citrulline helps to eliminate toxins, such as lactic acid and ammonia, two byproducts that arise after intense physical activity. These byproducts can significantly hinder high performance during exercise. Citrulline acts supportively in reducing the effects of these substances and their effective removal from the body.
