COPPER PROPERTIES

Copper helps the body absorb and use iron, participates in bone formation, and is essential (in synergy with vitamin C and zinc) in the formation of elastin, a basic component of skin, bones and connective tissue.

Other properties: helps maintain muscle tone, participates in the energy production process, in wound healing, in determining the color of hair and skin, in the formation of myelin, which is the protective sheath of nerves. It is also important for the immune system, studies have shown that its deficiency increases susceptibility to infections.
Recently, it has been shown that even a very small copper deficiency in humans significantly reduces both the number of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) in the peripheral circulation and their ability to kill microorganisms, while other in vitro studies have shown that even a marginal deficiency reduces interleukin 2 levels and limits T-cell proliferation.

Copper also has anti-inflammatory properties and is effective in some arthritic patients. This explains why copper bracelets are sometimes effective, since copper is slowly dissolved by sweat and absorbed through the skin. Copper deficiency is not very widespread, and is usually not found in pregnant women, premature infants, and those receiving total parenteral nutrition for long periods.

CONTRAINDICATIONS - PRECAUTIONS

Copper poisoning is rare, requiring doses 300 - 500 times higher than normal to occur. Those suffering from Wilson's disease (hepatofenoid degeneration) should not take copper supplements. Those suffering from liver or kidney failure should also not take copper supplements without the advice of a doctor. They should also not drink water from copper pipes, in which the water remains stagnant for long periods.
