Anemia is defined as the condition of reduced levels of hemoglobin in red blood cells. The most common causes of anemia are a lack of iron (iron deficiency anemia) or a lack of certain vitamins, such as B12 and folic acid (megaloblastic anemia). Common symptoms in this case are fatigue, lethargy, feeling weak or faint, shortness of breath, headache, palpitations, altered sense of taste, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), tongue pain, indigestion and diarrhea.

Other causes of anemia may include pregnancy, drug use, iron malabsorption due to intestinal disease, intestinal bleeding, chronic renal failure, chronic or neoplastic diseases, AIDS patients, and primary bone marrow diseases.

Of primary importance in the treatment of anemia is the identification of the primary cause that caused it with appropriate tests. In cases of iron deficiency or megaloblastic anemia, it is recommended, in addition to following a proper diet, to take iron or vitamin B12/folic acid supplements respectively.
