α-lipoic acid (ALA)

The majority of disorders observed in the morphology and function of the liver are due to the presence of oxidative stress.

ALA affects cellular antioxidant defenses, increasing the synthesis of endogenous antioxidants.

Increases the synthesis of endogenous glutathione, through increased plasma uptake of cystine.

It exerts its hepatoprotective effect in diabetes, improving the indicators of hepatocellular activity, such as ALT (alanine aminotransferase) and AST (aspartate aminotransferase).

Reduces elevated ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase, choleretrin and lipids in conditions of hepatotoxicity.

It also contributes beneficially to other conditions of liver damage, such as alcohol consumption as well as exposure to toxic environmental factors.

The hepatoprotective properties of ALA lead to a reduction in oxidative stress, hepatic inflammation and hepatic fibrosis.

Silymarin (Silymarin-Thistle)

Silymarin is a natural flavonoid derived from the plant Silybum marianum.

The main ingredient in silymarin is silympine.

The substance has hepatoprotective and antioxidant action.

The hepatoprotective effect is due to the stimulation of the synthesis of structural and functional proteins as well as phospholipids, as well as to the acceleration of the regeneration of hepatocytes.

The antioxidant activity is determined by the interaction of bioflavons with free radicals in the liver and its detoxification.

This stops the lipid peroxidation process and prevents further damage to the liver.

Selenium

Selenium is an essential component of cell function, the synthesis of various antioxidant enzymes, such as glutathione, and the synthesis of selenoproteins (vital proteins, essential for their important antioxidant activity).

It plays a very important role in balancing the redox environment of the human body.

Helps protect the liver:

reduces the damage caused to the liver by exposure to toxic substances in the environment
improves the antioxidant defense of hepatocytes, removing free radicals and preventing lipid peroxidation through glutathione peroxidase.
Accelerates the catabolism of ethanol, protecting the liver from alcohol.
stimulates both chemical and cellular immunity, enhancing immune function against the hepatitis virus.

Selenium has been shown to have therapeutic value in chronic liver disease.

Purpose: to investigate the relationship between serum selenium levels and the severity of hepatic fibrosis as well as mortality in patients with non-alcoholic liver filtration (NAFLD).
3,944 patients participated in the study: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) -III (1988–1994)
Personal interviews, laboratory tests and ultrasound were performed to assess the degree of liver steatosis.
The severity of hepatic fibrosis was determined with a NAFLD score> 0.676.
The risk of advanced liver fibrosis is inversely related to serum selenium levels. Mortality - regardless of cause - decreased with increasing selenium levels.
Selenium may play an important role in preventing liver fibrosis in patients with NAFLD.
N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC)

N-acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) is a sulfur-based amino acid.

It exerts its hepatoprotective action by replenishing glutathione stores and strengthening the body's cellular antioxidant defense.

It is commonly used to treat hepatic impairment due to acetaminophen significantly increasing the patient's chances of survival.

Prevents fat accumulation in clinical NAFLD models.

It appears to be effective in improving liver function by reducing pro-inflammatory markers such as interleukin-6 (IL-6), alpha tumor necrosis factor (TNF-a) and nuclear kappa-activated B cell factor (NF-Kb) .

This is achieved mainly through the attenuation of lipid peroxidation as well as the enhancement of intracellular antioxidant defense, increasing glutathione levels.

It has been shown to effectively treat liver failure caused by other factors, such as excessive alcohol consumption or environmental pollutants.

Significantly improves the function of liver enzymes such as ALT (alanine aminotransferase), AST (aspartate aminotransferase) and GGT (gamma-glytamyl-transferase).
