Ice is for injuries:
It soothes damaged tissues that are inflamed, red, hot and swollen.
The inflammatory process is a healthy, normal, natural process, which also happens to be extremely painful.
Applying cold to the injury is mostly a gentle, drug-free way to reduce pain and inflammation.
Heat is for muscles and chronic pain:
It is indicated for reducing muscle pain, such as back and neck pain, and as a sedative for the nervous system and brain (stress and fear are important factors in many chronic pain problems, of course).
