Calcium is an integral component of the skeleton. Approximately 99% of the total body calcium is found in bones and teeth (as calcium hydroxyapatite) with a basic structural role, while the remaining 1% acts as an intracellular messenger between cells and tissues1,2.

Vitamin D is essential for the regulation of calcium and phosphorus, making it essential for musculoskeletal health. Although vitamin D is produced in the skin after exposure to sunlight (UVB), its intake from foods or even from preparations is considered essential as exposure to adequate sunlight is not always possible or must be limited3,4.

Vitamin K was for many years considered important only for blood clotting, but recently more and more health benefits have been demonstrated, especially for bones and joints. Vitamin K promotes the production of osteocalcin, thus improving bone mass and reducing the risk of fractures and bone damage5.
