Turmeric or yellow root, Latin for Curcuma longa, also known as Indian Saffron is a rhizomatous, herbaceous perennial plant of the family Zingiberaceae, native to Southeast Asia and can grow up to 1 m in height. In India it was formerly used as a hair dye and as a spice.

Turmeric essential oil is obtained by distilling the roots of the plant and its aroma is spicy sweet and warm. The main molecules of its chemotypic composition are: ar-tourmerone 50-60%, tourmerone α 12-15%, β tourmerone 15-17%, zingibereno 20-25%, substances that give it strong antioxidant properties.
