The prostate is a gland of men’s genital apparatus placed under the bladder and around the upper tract of urethra. It develops an important function in the production of semen (20-30% of total ejaculate) thus secreting components which are fundamental for sperm survival and quality.
As time goes by, the prostate undergoes physiological modifications and may suffer from inflammatory disorders (prostatitis), degenerative illnesses (benign hyperplasia) and cancer (carcinoma).
BENIGN PROSTATE HYPERPLASIA
In benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) the prostate enlarges and suffers from a reduction in its functions. Considering the correlation of BPH with age, the modifications in hormones related to andropause is one of the main causes of this disorder. The excessive quantity of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in elder age, which is synthesized by enzyme 5-α-reductase, seems to play a key role in prostate hyperplasia.
Such enlargement tends to reduce prostate urethra thus causing an immediate symptom of difficulty in urinating: the bladder has to work harder to expel urine and it becomes weaker in time and consequently less efficient. Moreover, such difficulty in excreting liquids, makes waste products remain in the bladder for longer thus resulting in infections.
In the most serious cases urinating may become impossible (urinary retention).
In physiological conditions, the prostate, which is immediately below the bladder, surrounds the urethral duct without influencing its function. Urine is expelled regularly.
BENIGN PROSTATE HYPERPLASIA
In this case, the prostate compresses the urethra thus reducing its gauge: urine flow is considerably reduced. The permanence of urine in the bladder can lead to infections and inflammations.
INGREDIENTS and PROPERTIES
Saw Palmetto (Serenoa Repans) inhibits the enzyme responsible for the proliferation of prostate cells, thus for the BPH. It contributes to depression of symptoms associated with prostate hyperplasia, such as difficulty in starting urination, weak urinary stream, prolonged urination and filled bladder sensation. The beneficial effect of Saw Palmetto and the improvement of the patient will be seen after long-term use.
Selenium and Lycopene contribute to the prevention of BPH and have high antioxidant action.
