2. Lactoferrin (lactoferrin)

2.1. Origin. Lactoferrin is the protein of cow's but also human breast milk. The maternal colostrum is unusually rich in lactoferrin. Contains on average 7g of lactoferrin per liter (2). Cow's milk contains, on average, 100 mg of lactoferrin per liter (2). It is also a natural component of tears, saliva, nasal secretions, bile and pancreatic enzymes, as well as white blood cells (3).

2.2. Lactoferrin and iron homeostasis
Lactoferrin is one of the most important regulators of iron homeostasis. From recent clinical studies, it seems that lactoferrin may be a useful alternative to iron supplements. In a number of studies in pregnant women, compulsive women and children, lactoferrin appeared to be consistently more effective in restoring iron homeostasis and more tolerable than iron supplements.

2.3. Lactoferrin and infection protection
Studies have shown that lactoferrin supports the function of the immune system and protects against infections. In 2012 lactoferrin was recognized as safe (Generally Regarded as Safe) by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) (4). 1).
