Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a term used to describe infections of the urinary tract caused by harmful microorganisms.

The urinary tract is responsible for the production and excretion of urine.

It includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra.

If the immune system is weakened and microorganisms enter the urinary tract from the urethra and are not eliminated in time, they cause an infection.

The infection can occur in any of the organs of the urinary tract.

UTIs are more common in women, due to their anatomy, as the urethra is shorter and is located very close to both the vagina and the anus.

Urinary tract infections occur when bacteria, mainly Escherichia coli (E. coli), from the colon and rectum enter the urinary tract through the urethra.

These bacteria attach to the wall of the urinary tract and once attached, they can multiply and cause urinary tract infections.

Approximately 50% of the female population will experience a urinary tract infection at some point in their lives.

Although men do not get UTIs as often, their treatment and recovery may take longer.

The elderly and people with diabetes are also susceptible to urinary tract infections.

Regular consumption of cranberry juice is a method of preventing urinary tract infections since studies show that proanthocyanidins (substances contained in cranberries) prevent microbes from settling on the walls of the urethra.

Proanthocyanidins (PACs) are a group of bioactive molecules found in cranberries and are of particular importance for urinary tract health.

Studies have shown that a daily dose of 36mg of bioactive PACs exerts an anti-adhesive effect and prevents bacteria such as E. coli from adhering to the walls of the bladder.

The bacteria do not grow to cause infection as they are washed away with the flow of urine.

Since this mechanism does not kill bacteria, it is unlikely to lead to the creation of cranberry-resistant bacteria.
