Essential fatty acids

Fatty acids are vital since they form the membrane of every cell in our body. While one group of fatty acids can be produced by the body itself, the other group can only be obtained from the diet. It is this last group that is called essential fatty acids (EFA) since it is essential to eat them to stay healthy.

There are 2 types of EFAs: Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. In modern diets, sources of omega 6 are often numerous (seeds, nuts and vegetable oils). It is therefore rarely needed to take omega 6 as a supplement. On the contrary, modern diets are deficient of omega 3 from fish, as fish consumption has been declining. This is why we need to make sure we get enough omega 3 from fish!

Omega 3 from fish

There are 2 sources of omega 3 fatty acids: plant sources (short chained) and marine sources (long chained). Plant omega 3 does not have the same documented effects as marine omega 3. The reason is that plant omega 3 does not contain the important fatty acids DHA and EPA and must be converted to DHA and EPA in the body to have an effect. This takes time and is inefficient. However, marine omega 3 is a rich source of DHA and EPA.

The most common sources of marine omega 3 are:

  • Cold water oily fish (such as salmon, mackerel, herring, anchovies and sardines)
  • Fish liver (especially cod)
  • Omega 3 supplements (such as cod liver oil, fish oil or seal oil)

If you don’t get enough oily fish in your diet, it is essential to take marine omega 3 as a dietary supplement.

DHA and EPA

Omega 3 from fish is a rich source of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) . DHA and EPA are the most important of all the various fatty acids in the omega 3 family, as they are building blocks for cells in the entire body and key components of the brain, eye and heart.

For decades, thousands of scientific articles have been made on DHA and EPA. It is documented that DHA and EPA have a beneficial health effect on vital functions such as heart, blood circulation, brain, central nervous system and sight.

Natural Triglycerides

Marine omega 3 can come in three different forms - triglycerides, phospholipids and ethyl ester. Triglycerides (e.g. fish, seal) and phospholipids (krill) are natural, while ethyl ester is a synthetic form which does not exist in nature.

Research shows that both triglycerides and phospholipids have equal effect on the body - as both can be transformed into the other form by the body if needed - and that both are absorbed equally well by the body. However, most studies have been done on DHA and EPA in natural triglyceride form, while few studies have been done on phospholipids. All Möller’s omega 3 products are in natural triglyceride form.
